My approach to counselling
I’m an active and creative counsellor. I’m very interested in adapting the counselling to each person involved. Some clients like a counsellor to mostly listen and others want active participation during sessions or alternatives to straightforward talk therapy. We can work together to see what fits best for you. You are the expert on your own life and I can offer support and ideas to help you move towards greater happiness and improved communication.
My latest blogs:
'Taking Inventory in Relationships'
'Being With Children And Their Emotions'
'Be Creative? But I Can't Draw!'
'Fight Back Against Technology Fatigue!'
My inspiration to become a counsellor
I was initially inspired to become a counsellor when I was working as an administrator in a juvenile court in the USA. I kept seeing the same names revolving in and out of the criminal justice system and I thought “there has to be a better way”. I knew that with skilled intervention, delivered with warmth and compassion, young people could stop the repetitive pattern in which they were trapped. This led to training in Couple and Family Therapy in the USA and this added more depth to my Relate Training in Couples Counselling.
What I can help with
Anxiety, depression, grief, trauma recovery, parenting challenges, self-esteem, body image, bullying, technology fatigue, gender identity, sexual identity, relationship difficulties, life stage changes, work stress and many other issues/concerns.
Types of counselling
Systems theory underpins all my work – I seek to understand how each client affects and is affected by the world around them. I see myself as a collaborative consultant and support person, and see my clients as the experts of themselves, their relationships and their needs. If clients are interested I enjoy working creatively.
I draw from several approaches and use elements of many training courses I have attended over the last 12 years. For children and families, play therapy and parenting support are central to my work.
I use techniques from Experiential Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness and others.
