If you are not quite sure how to begin making your life better but feel you need to make a start and a change, then please contact me. I am a qualified integrative counsellor - this means that I will work with you to ensure we find the most effective way forward for you. I understand that  we are all different and therefore we need different approaches to work through problems and issues.

Personally speaking, I now realise what a benefit counselling would have been to me years ago. Losing my father at the age of twelve, I encountered grief, loss and discriminatory behaviour. These life experiences have helped me to understand and empathise with a wide range of emotions, fears and difficulties. They have also motivated me to help others. I am non-judgemental and accepting of my clients, whatever their situations my be.

"After the death of my grandmother in May 2014 I struggled greatly to cope with my grief. As well as bereavement issues I was well aware of a number of other ongoing problems.

Despite my anxiety about how difficult things would be, I felt reassured after our first meeting. Alvan was kind, professional, sensitive and obviously well skilled in dealing with bereavement issues. Alvan has been a source of incredible support to me on many fronts. Not only have we done work on my bereavement, we have also looked at the wider issues I have been struggling with for most of my life. I have attempted to undertake counselling on two occasions in the past to deal with these problems but been unable to commit to the process. I am now able to do this with Alvans support.

I have found his manner and persona of great comfort during the process. He is honest and displays a sense of humour which has been invaluable at certain points. Due to the complex nature of some of the issues I have needed to discuss, he has displayed flexibility and diversity in his approach in employing a number of counselling approaches. I have found this incredibly helpful when trying to make sense of subjects as I genuinely believe that rigid counselling approaches (sticking to one school of thought) would not have helped me. His awareness of timing, the use of silence, when to “push” me and when not to have all contributed to making my counselling experience a therapeutic one. He is non-judgemental and displays compassion and understanding for which I am truly thankful.

During the time we have worked together I have occasionally been given “homework”. This has helped me to understand that the process does not cease when I leave the room and restart at the next session but that it is an ongoing journey. He has provided me with pieces of writing which he felt may have been of benefit and indeed they have had significant resonance for me. This has made me feel understood and known.

I consider my time with Alvan to be a majorly positive outcome from a devastating life event." Client feedback, June 2015.
